Oh Truth & Compassion, Where for art thou? I see those traits every day when out in public. Anyone who is paying attention to who and what is said around them sees those traits in action at their supermarket, gas station, etc. Yet there is always one in the crowd. The odd person out, Mr. or Mrs. Self-promotor. That all-important, holier than thou, he/she whose time is more important than anyone. So, they skip the line or almost run you over with the shopping cart in trying to beat you to the check out line. Their space or any kind of right is more important than yours. They come in all colors, shapes, and races. But then have you noticed that some white people seem to be more entitled or at least think they are. Civility is not a dying art although it seems so all around us.
President Incivility currently holds the office at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He has set the tone for his 35% of the people base numbers. Remember when Mrs. Clinton called them unamerican? What do you think now? Their own president is carrying out policies that go against their own ideas. Yet for them, he can do no wrong. He’s pushing the Russian agenda not the American goals. We know rudeness when we hear, see or read about it. Hate crimes are on the rise. Violent aggression against different races, sexual orientation or religious preference. Those people feel free to express their hate and prejudices openly. Trump and his administration are loud but still in the minority. Everybody, America’s friends, enemies or allies, including his base knows who the Donald is, so no more mention of him in this article.
“There has never been but one question in all civilization-how to keep a few men from saying to many men: You work and earn bread, and we will eat it.” ― Abraham Lincoln
I want to reach out to those 65% majority of American. I got a feeling they are still about American principles and values. We all have ancestors who were from some other country. We have been in this country forever and still do not feel as entitled as some. Although we are aware of our individual inalienable rights. We are also mindful that we have to give our fellow Americans their space, their rights to the American Dream. Whichever way it goes we will fight to the death to protect our family or even our neighbors’ rights. Let’s not allow others to cloud our vision of who or what an American is or is not. Let’s not let others describe who is reporting Fake News. Because we are getting an hourly or daily diet of Fake News from the White House itself. A place where leadership, integrity and fairness use to rule the day. At one time it shows our nation and indeed the world what real democracy looks like. Have said that it was not perfect but at least the occupants tried to lead the entire country. Now the only influential people is those in the white house and their political base and party.
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” ― Abraham Lincoln
A couple of years ago, the doctor told me that I had to get an operation. My aortic valve needed to be replaced. It was such a shock to me that while the Doctor was giving me her recommendation. I looked around the room. Honestly, for a few seconds, I thought she was talking to somebody else. This must be a dream, I thought. She cannot be talking to the kid. Then the realization of no one being in the room but my wife, the doctor and I hit me. Yes, I concluded, she is talking to me.
Although I instantly agreed to the operation. We set an approximate date for a couple months in my future. I was still in shock. I could be put to sleep and never wake up. Knowing that I was in God’s hand was not so comforting at that moment. Because I was not sure what God had in mind for my future.
I ended up talking to an elderly friend of mine. I was going on about my anxieties with this upcoming procedure as the doctor put it. My friend Coleman had one piece of advice. The first thing he said was, “you got to get your mind right.” He would repeat it as if I didn’t hear him the first time. Now, I am a thinking man. So, I knew exactly what he was talking about. That was the day, an entirely new outlook began to form about this operation.
That is a phrase that we all must consider when we are facing life-changing decisions. Or political leanings in our country that deeply trouble us. This Sunday morning, July 8, the good Doctor Reverend Lance Watson from St Paul’s Baptist church out of Virginia spoke of the same phrase in a sermon. To face your more pressing issues, “You’ve got to get your mind right.”
“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.” ― Abraham Lincoln
I’ve been around long enough to see Civil Rights gains and thought we as a race of people would never go backward again. Then Ronald Reagan was elected as President. He and his party began to systematically chip at those gains. We had eight years of symbolism in Barack Obama. To be truthful, he didn’t do enough for people of color in my opinion. But at least he tried to be president for the entire country. While others in the opposite party did everything, they could to undermine his effects on our society.
We are now in a speeding train going where as a democracy? The country is being led by those who think that privilege should be enjoyed by a select few. While a do-nothing Republican-led Congress clears the way for what? The American idea is being repackaged to resemble a time before the civil war.
“You may deceive all the people part of the time, and part of the people all the time, but not all the people all the time.” ― Abraham Lincoln,
Mid-terms are approaching, a time when you as an American citizen can speak your peace by casting your vote. Despite voter depression laws in various states, Vote. There is only one question. Is this the America you envisioned, want to live in. Is this where you wish your kids to grow up? Are those in a particular party turning our nation over to a totalitarian government, despots, or a paranoid 35% of the voting public?
“Politicians are a set of men who have interests aside from the interests of the people and who, to say the most of them, are, taken as a mass, at least one long step removed from honest men” — Abraham Lincoln
Or can we, the 65% majority chart the direction of America by electing people who will indeed represent our values? That my friends are the American way. It may not seem like it at times, but we, by the grace of God, is still in charge of our destiny. Remember that as you hear the stories about our borders, the Supreme Court nominee, Russian investigation, Putin as a great man from the white house. This is still our country. The protest, voting for people who will change the direction of the country is our right as an American. We know the difference between right and wrong. Vote those who don’t…out.
Peace & Blessing…stay vigilant for our American rights. Make it a day in which Jesus Christ would be proud of you,

We are in a continuing effort to publicize my book, Gracie Hall-Hampton, the Arkansas Years 1917-1953. It’s based upon the life of my Grandmother. The Novel examines an era of Jim Crow that many in our society may have forgotten occurred against people of color. Meanwhile, we celebrate the publication of my latest and fifth book, Misguided Intentions. A book where family relationships are questioned to the core.
